SUMMARY

During my trip to Consimworld Expo in Tempe Arizona this Summer, I interviewed a number of interesting people. This is the fifth of those interviews.

THIS podcast is singularly composed of an interview with Cuba Libre co-designer , Jeff Grossman. We will discuss his work on Cuba Libre and what he has been doing here at Con Sim World Expo.

Jeff Studied History at Marquette University and possesses a Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. He began a career as an academic librarian in 1993 after stints in restaurant management, politics, “event management” (keeping drunks from puking on rock stars), and sales. Jeff is currently the Electronic Resources Librarian at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction Colorado.

Jeff has been playing conflict simulations since age 10 when my Aunt Sis bought Panzerblitz for him from the JC Penney catalog. He started designing and modifying games very soon after and still is always tinkering with something. Southeastern Wisconsin especially in the 1980s and 90s was a gaming wonderland. Designers Gary Gygax and Mike Carr as well as author James Lowder weren’t just names on a box or book, but people he could talk to about games and narratives. Trips to my FLGS The Dragon in Lake Geneva and Not So FLGS Napoleon’s in Shorewood would frequently turn into all day discussions of games, miniatures rules, or alternate history.

I recorded some of the sounds of the 2018 San Diego Historical Games Convention. The SD Hist Con took place over Veteran’s Day Weekend in November and included special guests Mark Herman, John Butterfield, Ananda Gupta, Morgane Guoyon Rety, and Volko Ruhnke to name a few.

In this first segment, Volko kicks off our designer challenge. This year the focus is on the COIN game Pendragon. Along with the games’ Designer Morgane Gouyon Rety Volko takes on 5 games. Each played one of the Barbarian factions and moved between tables to take their turns.

We are going to check in with them while they play through this challenge. We will also check in with other players at the convention to see what they are playing and how it is going.

O.Shane Balloun runs a Dune game at the con every year. He also runs a great boardgame convention out of Bellingham Washington in January if you are available. Here he and my son Trey give me a recap of the game at different points. We also sprinkle in some additional updates of whats going on across the con.

The board game bootcamp has been with us since the beginning. Tim and Karl spend most of the con making teaching games and spreading the love.
